Books I want to read

  • The Medici Effect: What Elephants and Epidemics Can Teach Us About Innovation (Paperback) by Frans Johansson

  • Bioviolence: Preventing biological terror and crime by Barry Kellman

  • Emergency management: The American experience 1900-2005 edited by Claire B. Rubin
  • Field notes from a catastrophe: Man, nature and climate change by Elizabeth Kolbert
  • Green remodeling: Changing the world one room at a time by David R. Johnston and Kim Master
  • Deming, W. Edwards (1986). Out of the Crisis. MIT Press. ISBN 0-911379-01-0.
  • First Break All the Rules by Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman
  • Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman
  • Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond
  • The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in America by Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murray
  • The Leadership Machine: Architecture to Develop Leaders for Any Future by Michael Lombardo and Robert Eichinger
  • Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference AND Blink, both by Malcolm Gladwell
  • Inside Terrorism by Bruce Hoffman
  • FINISHED The Long Emergency by James Kunstler : This book portrays a stark view of what could happen in this country when our fossil fuel supplies run out (in 37 years, according to the author). I am hoping that he is painting a worse case scenario and that we pull our heads out of the sand (to put it nicely) in time to keep anything so dire from happening.
  • The Geography of Nowhere and Home from Nowhere, both by James Kunstler
  • The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman
  • A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar
  • Linked: How Everything Is Connected to Everything Else and What It Means by Albert-Laszlo Barabasi
  • Learning in Real Time: Synchronous Teaching and Learning Online by Jonathan Finkelstein
  • Unintended Consequences by John Ross
  • The Persian Puzzle by Kenneth Pollack
  • FINISHED-almostInsurgency and Terrorism by Bard O'Neill - I struggled to get half-way through this book. I'm sure it is a useful tome, but it reads like a text book and I had a hard time staying with it. Half-way was the best I could do.
  • World War Z by Max Brooks (according to my son, it is really good on audio book because of the acting)
  • Authors recommended by Johno: David Sedaris, David Rakoff, Sarah Vowell, David Foster Wallace
  • Isaac's Storm and Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
  • Them: Adventures with Extremists by Jon Ronson
  • Future Files: A history of the next 50 years by Richard Watson

  • The design of everyday things by Donald A. Norman
  • FINISHED The Looming Tower: al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 by Lawrence Wright - This is an excellent book that helped me to have a much better understanding of the Islamic world view and how different it is from mine. I also learned a tremendous amount about all the players, foreign and domestic, who were connected to 9/11. It is one of those books you just can't put down once you start it.
